This really happened.
It’s easier to teach someone to go to space than to teach someone to drill a well.
This is well established in the true life documentary film “Armageddon” in which Bruce Willis saves the earth by hitting TD on an asteroid. While Ben Affleck may not buy that story, it felt easier to teach folks at an E&P company to go to the Cloud than to teach an Azure solutions architect what matters day to day to a Drilling Engineer, Land Man, or JIB Accountant. You ever try to google Completions optimization? They’re not exactly posting their secrets on forums like the Azure guys do.
I’ve fielded too many bad software pitches for well developed, slick software solutions that offer no value to the actual work I needed to get done. And I’ve spent too much time in meetings working on in-house software development projects describing, in detail, the specific workflows that I was responsible for, how they could be improved, and how to handle exceptions to that workflow. Only to meet the following week and describe it all over again.
What’s it like working with Velocity Insight?
So our pitch is this. Your time is valuable. If you weren’t too busy you wouldn’t be considering outsourcing your project. The last thing you need is a for that outsourced project to become another part time job explaining exactly what you want because your contractors don’t understand the why’s and how’s of what you need. When you hire VI, we come with the industry context to understand what you do and what matters to you. You don’t have to explain your data beyond the login credentials, but you do get cutting edge cloud architecture experience, detailed input on which of the hundreds of software solutions available would be best for your application, and learnings and best practices from working with dozens of clients and hundreds of client projects like yours. Bottom line: If you know where you want to go, we can help you get there, fast.
“Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it.” – Steven Wright
That’s the beauty of outsourcing to VI, we’ve already got that experience. In the early days of VI we wound up building a lot of custom tools for each new database we worked with, but these days it’s very likely we’ve already got a ton of experience not just with your system, but with several competing systems. Increasingly, when we approach a new client project we’re not just seeing similar issues and data model structures, but exactly the same ones. That means we’re not just bringing a workflow and expertise, but code, visuals, and ETL steps to rapidly get you the data you need in the format you need it. This allows for new work products to be stood up in a matter of hours instead of days. We aim to have a kickoff meeting, a 15 minute standup meeting once a week, and respect your busy schedule. We do have clients that would rather we keep billable hours to a minimum, and in those cases we’ll offload as much work and QC to their staff as possible. We’re happy to work that way too.
Some Recent Examples
We recently helped a client stand up some automated reporting to assist with QC’ing their transition from P2 Merrick to Quorum’s Field Insights. Data was coming in to both systems but they needed a way to compare one against the other without exporting huge .csv’s daily and spending all afternoon on VLOOKUPs in Excel. By leveraging some QC visuals we’d built on another client’s Field Insights database and as our deep knowledge of Merrick, we had a comparison dashboard set up the same week as our kickoff meeting, refreshing live on the cloud with not just the list of wells missing from one system or the other, but missing run tickets, tank level differences, well tests, and production volumes.
I’m working on a project at the moment where the entirety of the reserves workflow is identical to a recent client, meaning we had their reserves data loaded into their data warehouse only a few hours into the project. We’re barely into week one and I’m already deep in the weeds on data QC and writing the DAX necessary to match specific workflows in their production surveillance spreadsheet. That’s one spreadsheet that will never again require time spent on upkeep, updates, or distribution. Their engineers and field staff will have an evergreen, cloud-backed, always up to date report to reference, reducing time spent in route reviews and answering questions, and giving them more time to focus on how to improve the bottom line.
